The Gateway to Mantrailing is a one-off introduction that gives students a hands-on experience working with a trained search dog.

Designed for real educational environments, the session focuses on communication, teamwork, responsibility, and problem-solving through practical, outdoor activities.

It works equally well as a standalone experience or as the starting point for longer programmes.

Students aged 11-18
Designed for middle, secondary and upper school students across a wide range of abilities.
Schools exploring longer programmes
A natural starting point before moving into structured leadership or certificate pathways.
Enrichment or wellbeing days
Ideal for off-timetable learning, activity days, and student wellbeing programmes.
Inclusive student groups
Suitable for mixed abilities, including students with SEN and neurodiverse learners.

The Gateway session is an exciting, hands-on introduction to the world of search dogs. Students work together, taking part in real search exercises and experiencing how the dogs use scent to locate a person.

Rather than sitting and listening, students are actively involved throughout the session, working directly with the dog and learning by doing.

1. Meeting the Search Dog
Students are introduced to the dog and learn how search work begins.

2. Setting up the Trail
Students help prepare simple trails and understand how the dog follows them.

3. Working the Search
Students take part in live search exercises, handling, observing, and supporting the dog as it works.

4. Reflecting as a Team
The session finishes with a short group reflection on what they experienced and learned.
