A Different Way to Learn

Mantrailing is more than dogs following scent trails. It gives students the opportunity to collaborate, problem-solve, and take responsibility in real time, working as part of a team with a trained search dog.

Sessions are active and practical, built around experience rather than instruction alone. Students learn to communicate clearly, support one another, and adapt when things don’t go to plan, all within a calm, structured outdoor environment.

The dogs play a central role in this process. Students quickly learn that success depends on patience, observation, and teamwork rather than control or force, creating a learning experience that is engaging, memorable, and accessible to a wide range of personalities and abilities.

Designed for students aged 11–18, programmes integrate easily into international and independent school environments, from one-off workshops and project weeks to ongoing extracurricular sessions or structured certificate pathways.

Learning in Action

Sessions are active, hands-on, and fully supervised.

Students work in small teams, rotating through real search roles and learning directly from the dogs and each other.

1. Briefing and role assignment

Students are introduced to the search plan, safety protocols, and their individual role within the team, setting clear expectations before the search begins.

2. Trail planning

Working together, students design a scent trail, making decisions about route, environment, and strategy while considering how the dog will experience the search.

3. Live search exercise

The dog follows the trail while students handle, observe, and support the search. Each role contributes to the outcome, and teams must communicate and adapt in real time.

4. Team reflection

After the search, students review what happened, discuss decisions they made, and reflect on how their teamwork influenced the result.
